This morning, I watched NECN – New England Cable Network – news and they said “Romney got roughed up last night”. I immediately shouted out, “he was attacked, not roughed up!” startling my wife, as I usually do when I hear something said on TV that cries out for correction. Last night McCain, Giuliani and Huckabee attacked Romney but he handled it well, as usual, so he was not “roughed up”.
I was struck by three things about the debate last night:
-
McCain was very frustrated whenever any of Romney’s facts would get in the way of his spin. Like Brit Hume said this morning, “McCain seemed childish at times” – like a giddy frat boy who tries to embarrass the guy with glasses by calling him a geek in front of the girls.
-
It was clear last night that only Romney, among the GOP leaders, understands what outraged the people last summer over McCain’s disasterous immigration bill. Astonishingly, Huckabee and Giuliani still don’t get the message – the illegals here now must go home and get back in line – not deported – but overtime, just like they came.
-
Romney, with a Harvard MBA and Law Degree, has an amazing grasp of policy issues. He gave a detailed description of the infaltion factors affecting healthcare, the intentions of radical jihadists and what really happened in Iowa.
Romney is not only on his game, but his game is far ahead of McCain, Huckabee, Thompson and Paul. Only Giuliani stands out like Romney does but his decision to stubbornly cling to the approach to immigration he had as NY mayor lost me. I was undecided between Rudy and Mitt until last night and Mitt’s strong position on illegal immigration versus Rudy’s made the difference.
